For a long time, Dresden’s fame has unfortunately been attributed to its claim to being one of the most bombed cities of World War II. However, over the last decade or so it has successfully acquired a name for itself as a city with much to offer in the way of visitor attractions. With many of its old palaces and period buildings restored to their former glory, this is a destination with striking beauty and form at the turn of every corner.

Dresden has something to offer all visitors whether retirees, young and independent types or families with little ones in tow. The Großer Garten perhaps has the greatest all-round appeal, especially during the summer when it draws visitors of all ages for relaxation, games and sporting activities. Come wintertime, if you can brave the cold, the ice rink at the Ostragehege Sports Park is where the action is at.

Although many of Dresden’s finest landmarks and architectural gems were badly damaged or indeed razed completely by the Allied bombing campaign of World War II, the city has spent the last 60 years dedicated to rebuilding and restoring many of those structures. The result is that Dresden today is very much a sightseer’s destination with some fantastic buildings that have successfully recaptured the influences of Baroque and Classicistic periods among others.

Dresden Klotsche Airport is the main gateway to the city and is located a short drive northeast of the city centre. The airport maintains connections with a large number of EU cities as well as some international destinations. National carrier Lufthansa operates a significant proportion of the flights to and from the airport.
