Strasbourg is located in the pretty Alsace region of France, in the northeast of the country, right on the border with Germany, and is both a popular wine making region and a tourist hotspot. Presiding over the Rhine Valley around 300 miles east of Paris, it is the capital of Alsace and has a distinctly Franco-Germanic blend.

This medium-sized town has a historic core known as la Petite France, which is hemmed in on all sides by water and features the pink Cathédrale de Notre-Dame as its most prominent feature. Amazing windows and fine views are this Gothic leviathan’s main draws, and markets and concerts go off here in season.

Strasbourg is also home to museums, with the brilliant Musée de l’Oeuvre located in the cathedral and the modern art museum being highly rated in art circles. Other noted sights include the beautiful Rohan Palace, the Covered Bridges and the quirky European Parliament building. Shopping and dining options also excel in Strasbourg, and the town is nice and compact. There are many pedestrianised streets that are suitable for daytime strolling.

Kids will also enjoy Strasbourg, as it has a fun amusement park, many fine city parks and lots to do in the nearby Vosges Mountains. Skiing is particularly popular in these peaks in the winter. In addition, a slew of towns and villages follow the Rhine River through the Alsace region, with the Route du Vin (Wine Route) being a big draw.

Strasbourg has all ranges and styles of hotels across a decent range of budgets, from moderately priced inns station to the four-star well located hotel and resort of Regent Petite France. If you can stretch your finances to stay in this region of town, you won’t regret it.

The most important point to remember when booking hotels in Strasbourg is to book well ahead, as it gets very busy year round, particularly so in the summer and winter. Booking online gives you the freedom to seek out the best hotels and rates at your leisure and to get the best discounts.

Strasbourg International Airport is located within the city limits, just to the southwest, and receives flights from around the world. A shuttle bus and tram combination will get you to town from the airport, while taxis are available 24 hours, as is car hire. Strasbourg is also well served by rail from Paris and nearby German cities, and Eurolines buses also hit the town.

Weather

With its continental climate, Strasbourg sees four seasons, and is good for a visit at any time of year. Summers are hot, winters are cold and everything in between is fairly mild, and it rains most frequently between May and September. The cold winters allow for good skiing in the nearby Alsace Mountains, while Christmas in the city is considered high season.

Summers get hot and humid in Strasbourg due to its inland locale, with temperatures averaging in the low 20s (°C) and peaking at well over 30°C on a typical August summer’s day. The best time to visit Strasbourg is in the spring or autumn, when temperatures are fairly mild, rainfall is lower and crowd levels aren’t so brutal.
