Mont Saint Michel is located at the mouth of the Coueson River, one kilometer off the northern coast of Normandy, France. A tidal island, Mont Saint Michel is home to a village, abbey and other structures, including at one time a prison. The entire site was designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, and efforts have been underway to help the historical shrine return to true island status after years of encroachment by developments. Visitors to the area can find no end of fascinating historical curiosities to admire and explore, and the destination is a favourite of tourists visiting northern France. Be sure to book early for the best selection of accommodation.
