Marseille, France's second largest city enjoys a scenic Mediterranean location and owes much of its status to the strength of its port, a feature that has played an integral part in the history of Marseille since its early days. Historical sights are evident around the town, yet are complimented by the ambience of a modern metropolis and seaside holiday destination.
The Aix Marseille Golf Club, an 18-hole course located just 15kms (nine miles) north of the city is perhaps the best course available to golf enthusiasts visiting Marseille. Alternatively, there is the Golf Marseille La Salette, a smaller course offering putting and pitching greens plus club, buggy and trolley hire. Phone: +33 4 42 24 20 41 (Aix Marseille Golf Club).
Marseille's biggest pedestrianised square is a focal part of daily life in the city and one of the best places to head for shopping, dining or meeting with friends. Grab a coffee at a streetside cafe and do a spot of people-watching while soaking up the unique, local ambience.
The city's public transport network is comprised of metro and bus services, the two being operated by the same company and providing an integrated travel system. The bus network covers a large area including the suburbs. Taxis are easy to find in the city, but English-speaking drivers are few so a map and a phrasebook can be useful.
Marseille does not present any major threats to health, with tap water being drinkable, levels of hygiene in public eateries high and no significant levels of transmittable diseases. Visitors who take ill for whatever reason will find a good standard of medical treatment at the city's hospitals. EU visitors with a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) can get free emergency treatment. All other visitors will need travel insurance with medical cover in order to avoid having to pay expensive medical bills in the event of an emergency.
