Lyon's climate is influenced by the changeable (often chilly) weather patterns of the high-altitude Rhone-Alpes region as well as the balmy and mild Mediterranean fronts. Winters are cold, while spring and autumn can be quite comfortable. Average summertime highs approach 27oC; and as visitors head further south in to the wine-lands of the Rhone valley, they encounter increasingly warm summer days. Rainfall persists in every season, though it's significantly greater during the month of October and again (though to a lesser degree) between April and May.
There are several entertaining activities available to families with children in Lyon. Two primary animal-centred attractions are located in the city: the zoo at Parc de la Tete d'Or and the Aquarium du Grand Lyon. There is also a longstanding tradition of puppeteering in Lyon, and many of the local theatres offer special productions that cater specifically for children.
New Year’s Day: a day of celebration for families and friends; most gather together for traditional feasts on the eve of the holiday before heading out into town as midnight and fireworks are launched. Locals once preferred to give gifts on this day rather than Christmas Day, and some traditionalists continue this practice.
Lyon offers visitors an endless area of historic sites and charming city squares, especially in the old city (Vieux Lyon) which is listed in its entirety as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Renaissance-era mansions are commonplace, as the booming 15th-century silk market funded countless building projects. Visit Fourviere Hill for panoramic views of the city along with a chance to explore the Basilica and two ancient Roman theatres.
There are numerous other modes of transport that access Lyon. The Traina Grand Vitesse (TGV) high-speed railway links the international airport with the cities of Marseille and Paris. Both of these connections take approximately two hours. There are three other train stations in Lyon: Part-Dieu, which services Marseille, Montpellier and Grenoble; Perrache, the regional hub located within a short walk of Place Bellecour; and St Paul, the provincial station set in the heart of the city.
