Lourdes retains the attraction of an authentic Pyrénées town and is endowed with a rich natural as well as architectural heritage. The centre is dominated by a fortress dating from medieval times, which today is home to the popular attraction, Musée Pyreneen. In addition, the steep alleyways and ancient structures that characterise the old town are a testament to Lourdes’ historically-significant past.

Lourdes makes an excellent base for visits to the Pyrénées. Tours of these snow-capped mountains are on offer and typically cross the border into Spain, and horseback riding is a popular option in the Lac de Lourdes area, just three kilometres (1.8 miles) from Lourdes city. Golf, hiking, and spa visits are all available as well. One of most well-known thermal spas is Bagnères-de-Bigorre, located 23kms (14 miles) east of Lourdes.

The primary attractions of interest in Lourdes are religious in nature, such as the cave where the sightings of the Virgin Mary occurred and the Basilica of the Rosary which was built over the site to protect it. The cathedral, built in Romanesque style, is one of the world’s largest and is a must-see.

The Tarbes Ossun Lourdes Airport (LDE) is a small regional facility located near Lourdes city, nine kilometres (5.5 miles) south-southwest of Tarbes. The airport’s only regularly-scheduled service connects Lourdes with Paris. There are numerous charter flights servicing the airport, however, comprising more than 70 per cent of the total annual traffic. Passengers arrive on charters operated by a number of European carriers, often making the journey as a pilgrimage of faith.
