Top Things to See

One of the real charms about Dijon is its symbiotic blend of modern pleasures and medieval surroundings. The half-timbered houses of its downtown core contain both businesses and residences anchored by a cluster of three striking churches. Dijon’s premier museum, the Musée des Beaux-Arts, resides in a splendid old palace, while its quirkiest museum, the Musée de la Moutarde, is a tribute to the city’s timeless connection with mustard. Plenty of wonderful architecture coupled with a great atmosphere makes Dijon a joy to explore.

L’Ancien Couvent des Bernardines
Another of Dijon’s excellent architectural attractions is this medieval nunnery on rue Ste-Anne. Wandering the grounds, you can get a tangible sense of the historic atmosphere of the place through its cloister, chapel and outbuildings. The convent is home to two museums, with the Musée d'Arts Sacrés worth some lingering contemplation. Its collection of sacred art from regional churches around Burgundy is impressive. Musee des Beaux-Arts Dijon
Dijon’s best museum is one of France’s most renowned art galleries. Housed in the eastern wing of the Palais des Dukes, this amazing collection of art, antiquities and sculpture is a must-see for any visitor. From Gothic sepulchres to gilded altarpieces, the sculpted works are among the finest in Europe. The 14th century Tomb of Philip the Bold is particularly spectacular. The museum’s collection of European paintings from the 14th through 19th centuries is also notable. Phone: +33 3 8074 5270.

Notre Dame Cathedral
Just as beautiful as its Parisian counterpart, Dijon’s iconic 13th century church is truly something to behold. Among its unique qualities is a complete lack of square corners and some impressive, original details. Adorned with classic gargoyles on the eaves and a 14th century Jacquemart Clock at the top, Notre Dame spared no expense to create an architectural masterpiece. Its central location behind the Palais des Dukes allows visitors to combine a visit to the church with a trip to the palace and art museum.

Palais des Dukes
This magnificent building was once the throne hall of the Dukes of Burgundy, a very powerful clan during their heyday. It is the base of Dijon’s historic core, as several of the city’s most notable attractions are clustered around it. Today, the palace serves as the city hall. Although some parts of the building are closed to the public, visitors can take an interesting English language tour and learn more about this legendary site.

Tower of Philip the Good
If your legs are feeling strong, make the climb to the top of the 15th century Tour Philippe le Bon, where you will be rewarded with the finest views in Dijon. On a clear day you can see all the way to Mont Blanc, but the panorama over the city’s streets and buildings is excellent on any day. At 46 metres high, it’s an impressive tower and one of Dijon’s main landmarks.

We enjoyed the dinner though the style of the food was classic French and therefore more like a trip to the past. We would have preferred at least a choice of some more modern French cuisine....
