Bordeaux, the capital of the Aquitaine region, is perhaps best known for its contributions to popular lists of wines of global repute, with its many vineyards producing world-class vintages that can please even the most discerning of wine aficionados. The city has plenty of other attractions too, with fine beaches, historic buildings, eye-catching landmarks and pretty gardens to name but a few.
Bordeaux's Museum of fine arts is home to an impressive collection of works covering the period from the 15th to the 20th century. Within the collection are paintings by masters such as Rubens, Titian, Veronese, Marquet and Perugina. Phone: +33 5 56 10 20 56.
Bordeaux's grandest church sits on the southern side of the Old Town perimeter and is notable for its 47-metre high 15th century belfry tower and collection of 13th century sculptures. Almost as large as the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, the cathedral sits opposite the Archbishop's Palace.
Bordeaux is easily reachable by road, as it's served by a number of major highways. From Paris, the A10 motorway provides the principle access, with the journey from the capital taking about five hours. While getting around the city by car is not recommended, a hire car can be useful for visiting the nearby vineyards, and vehicles can be hired in the city centre.
The French are fairly conservative, and formality is considered important in many social arenas, especially in business and dining. Residents of Bordeaux typically don smart or smart casual attire when eating out and attempt to maintain tidy appearances at all other times. Swimwear is reserved for the beach and poolside, while shorts are okay for a sightseeing trip, but not for restaurants. Wine is popular in Bordeaux, but the locals rarely drink in excess and behave inappropriately under the influence, so visitors are advised to follow suit.
