Airports

The Avignon-Caumont Airport is just eight kilometres southeast of the city, but it handles only a limited number of flights focused mainly on business travellers. International travellers may want to fly into the more distant Marseille-Provence Airport, as it handles flights from around 80 destinations.

Taxis provide the only transport from the Avignon-Caumont Airport, while shuttle buses and taxis are available from the Marseille-Provence Airport.

Both airports have a full range of passenger facilities, although the three terminals at Marseille-Provence Airport offer much more comprehensive amenities. Banks, ATMs and currency exchange kiosks can be found at both airports, as well as car hire offices of most major European rental firms.

Public Transport

If you aren’t flying to Avignon, the train offers an equally convenient and comfortable means of getting here. Avignon lies on the regional Provencal train network, and trains servicing the city are punctual but suffer from inconsistent standards of service. High-speed TGV trains also runs to Avignon, stopping at the Avignon TGV station just four kilometres south of the centre. Travellers can get from Paris to Avignon in 2 hours, 40 minutes by TGV train. Eurostar also runs a weekly train from London to Avignon between July and September.

International coach service is handled by Eurolines and Linebus. Avignon’s coach station, Gare Routière, is the arrival point for buses from across Europe and the UK. Avignon’s public bus system provides decent coverage of the city if you need to get somewhere outside the centre. Buses run from 07:00 to 19:30, Monday through Saturday, with limited service on Sundays.

Taxis can be found at taxi ranks outside train stations and tourist areas. However, most of the city’s attractions lie in the old part of town and are best explored on foot. Cars can be hired if you are over 21 years old and have a valid international driving license. Driving in the city is pleasant, as the roads are good are traffic is generally light.
