New Years Day: on this nationwide public holiday, citizens of Tampere celebrate the coming of the New Year with quiet family get-togethers and a period of reflection over the previous year’s failings and accomplishments. Many residents like to head for the saunas on this day.
Tampere International Short Film Festival: has been held annually for over 35 years. It is a celebration of the art of short film making and offers five days and nights during which around 120 screenings are presented to accumulated audiences in excess of 29,000 spectators.
Tampere Biennale: the Biennale is an annual festival of contemporary music conducted at a variety of venues including the Tampere Railway Station, the Tampere Hall and the Old Church. A variety of musical ensembles showcase their talents including at least one performance by the highly respected Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra.
Pispala Schottische: is the collective term for an international folk dance and folk music festival comprised of three different events, all of which are organised by the Finnish Youth Association in conjunction with the City of Tampere. The three events are Pispala Schottische, Dance Mania and Folklandia Cruise and each is staged at a different time of the year. Pispala Schottische is held in June and features folk music and new folk dance choreographies.
Tammerfest: lasting 5 days and nights, this urban city festival is one of the summer’s most popular events and sees residents and visitors alike take to the city’s streets, parks and nightclubs for live and DJ-played music sets. Dancing is inevitable and is almost round the clock throughout the event.
Tampere Floral Festival: lasts for nine days, during which time more than 180-flower and plant related events are staged. Tens of thousands of visitors flock to Tampere city centre to view several thousand different flora arrangements.
Dance Mania: the second event in the Pispala Schottische festival is Dance Mania and features an eclectic mix of dance, theatre and concerts focused around the Tullikamari and Tammerkoski areas.
Tampere Illuminations: an annual event for over 40 years, the city lights itself up with a magnificent illuminative display that includes 200 characters made from lights and the utilisation of more than 33,000 bulbs and over a kilometre of cable wire.
Tampere Jazz Happening: is an annual music festival which sees a mix of Finnish and international jazz musicians assemble to showcase their talents before large crowds comprising locals and visitors. The event lasts for four days.
Christmas: Finland celebrates the Christmas season as enthusiastically as any European country and Tampere presents residents and visitors with traditional Christmas events and activities including classical Christmas music concerts, religious services and festive lights and decorations.
