Located between Sweden and Russia and just across the water from Estonia, Finland is a Nordic country renowned for its awesome landscapes, natural beauty and peacefulness. A vast number of lakes and forests as well as a unique archipelago combine to make Finland one of Europe’s most scenic countries.
Doll & Toy Museum (Suomenlinnan Nukke- ja lelumuseo)
At the Doll and Toy Museum in Helsinki, visitors can view a collection comprising some 2,000 or more toys which date back from 1830 and include teddy bears, dolls and dolls’ houses as well as toy cars and many more. The museum is a small facility housed in an old Russian villa but is well worth a visit as it holds objects of interest for both children and adults.
New Years Day
A nationwide public holiday, the Finns celebrate the beginning of the new year as a time for reflection and quiet family get-togethers. Saunas are of course always busy at this time.
Aleksanterin Kirkko
Located in Tampere, Aleksanterin Kirkko is a neo-Gothic church that dates back to 1880 and offers visitors views of magnificent architecture from the exterior and ornate décor in its interior. Among the many points of interest inside the church, an altarpiece painted by Aleksandra Saltin in 1883 is a focal point. The church is a working religious facility so visitors need to check whether services are being conducted before venturing inside.
Finland has over 24 airports which are spread across the entire country. Many of these are international facilities providing connections with European countries and others beyond the EU. Helsinki International Airport is the country’s most significant gateway and sees the highest percentage of visitors pass through its gates. Tampere and Turku also have their own airports which see a reasonable number of international flights.
There are no particular threats with regards to safety for visitors in Finland. Crime rates are low compared to other EU countries and while organised crime factions from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union do operate in the big cities, they are of low concern for average holiday makers. Make sure you use general common sense while in the cities as this will help to ensure that you don’t fall victim to miscreants. Pickpockets can be thwarted by keeping wallets or purses in front pockets, while steering clear of unlit, unpopulated areas at night can help prevent you becoming the target of street thieves.
