Helsinki's weather is influenced by both maritime and continental climate patterns and there are four distinct seasons.
In winter, dozens of skating rinks can be found in Helsinki, many of which are located close to the centre of town. A popular skating centre is the Kallion tekojaarata at Brahen kentta, which plays music and sells warm juice and hot chocolate. Skates are also available for rent here. There are also several indoor skating rinks.
Helsinki International Boat Show: in mid-February provides a breath of fresh summer air in the cold Finnish winter, showcasing vessels ranging from luxury yachts to motorboats, rowing boats and canoes.
Also known as Suurkirkko or St Nicholas church, the cathedral is Helsinki's most significant landmark. The stately outline of its central tower exemplifies the true splendour of the White City of the North. The cathedral features a high-ceilinged crypt, an exhibition and concert venue and a café open daily in summer.
Helsinki Vantaa International Airport, commonly referred to as its airport code HEL, handles dozens of daily direct international and domestic flights. Located 18kms north of Helsinki, the airport is easily accessible and serves more than 15 million passengers a year. The main service providers at the airport are Finnair, SAS, British Airways and Lufthansa.
No vaccinations are necessary to visit Finland and there are no diseases particularly rife in any region of the country. Visitors from the EU are no more in danger of falling sick than in their home countries. Water is completely safe to drink, though visitors may not be used to its taste and may rather buy bottled water, which is comparatively cheap and available in big bottles from supermarkets. Health care services and standards in Finland are very high and most medical professionals speak good English.
