The islands of Fiji offer an amazingly diverse experience for visitors, with a wonderful combination of natural beauty and unique Fijian culture. With excellent weather nearly all year round, clear clean water and typically idyllic South Pacific beaches, tourists continue to trickle in despite the ongoing political instability which keeps Fiji in a state of flux. As long as the political situation appears calm, there’s no reason to avoid Fiji, but visitors really need to stay abreast of things before and during their stay.
Most kids like going to the beach or exploring strange and colourful natural environments and Fiji is full of them. They come in many styles and offer a range of activities, from boating excursions to railroad journeys and floating along a river on a handmade bamboo raft. If your kids are adventurous, you’ll find there’s plenty to keep them entertained.
New Years Day
Celebrations can continue for a week, or even a month, in some areas of Fiji as the islanders ring in the New Year.
Naturally, most of the attractions on Fiji revolve around the sea and the sand. However, these islands also boast some unique and fascinating cultural explorations involving the indigenous Fijians and the Indo-Fijian community. For a taste of South Pacific culture, Fiji is one of the best stops and the locals will ensure that you have a good time whatever you do.
Air
Thanks to its central location in the mid-South Pacific, Fiji is one of the region’s main airline hubs. Many international carriers fly into Fiji from destinations all around the Pacific Rim. Even though Suva is the capital city, and has its own small airport, most travellers fly into Nadi International Airport which is located 9kms from the centre of Nadi. Nausori International Airport 23kms northeast of Suva, is Fiji’s second international airport. Air New Zealand, Air Pacific and Qantas Airways all fly to Fiji from North America, Australia and New Zealand and are the main carriers to the islands. Polynesian Airlines, Royal Tongan Airlines, Air Nauru and Air Calin provide regional service from the South Pacific area, including Australia and New Zealand.
The currency in Fiji is the Fiji dollar. Paper currency comes in denominations of 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50. One dollar can be divided into 100 cents. The coins come in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents, as well as 1 dollar coins. US dollars are also readily accepted at most businesses.
