Located in the centre of England, in the Black Country, Birmingham is the UK's second largest city and is well known for its past days of heavy industry. Today Birmingham is both cosmopolitan and stylish and features some great shopping and some worthwhile attractions.
Birmingham's Ikon Art Gallery is ideal for those into contemporary art, being one of the very best in its field in Europe. The main gallery is a huge hall that contains many brilliant permanent works of art as well as visiting exhibitions. Ikon is primarily an educational charity and also has a bookshop and a quality cafe that serves good Spanish food. Phone: +44 121 248 0708; website: www.ikon-gallery.co.uk
National Boat, Caravan and Outdoor Show: this annual event at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) features numerous boats, caravans, motor homes and park homes and is the best place to come to see and buy the latest models.
Aston Hall is a stunning Jacobean mansion which was started in 1618 and was 17 years in the making. The red brick mansion is opulently decorated throughout and features magnificent paintings such as a Romney and a Gainsborough from the Birmingham Museum and period furniture. The 130-foot long panelled gallery is the highlight while outside are beautifully-manicured grounds. Phone: +44 121 327 0062; website: www.birmingham.gov.uk/astonhall
Birmingham's Centro metro system is linked with the city's buses and although the metro is largely aimed at commuters running from Birmingham to Wolverhampton, tourists can easily see the Jewellery Quarter and the markets. Daily and weekly multi-ride tickets are available.
Birmingham is a large city and has had problems in the past with violent crime. The place has been cleaned up of late, however, although there are areas to be wary of day and night, including the suburbs of Aston, Lozells, Newtown and Sparkbrook. Also, keep clear of city parks at night and rowdy Broad street in the city centre after closing time.

This month's lucky winner is Mr. Laith Addabbas who lives in Jordan.
