On the east coast of the Dominican Republic, Punta Cana is one of the country's fastest-growing resort communities. A string of leviathan, all-inclusive resorts with countless first-class amenities appeal to package tourists, offering them the opportunity to experience the country in a safe and relaxed environment.

Above all, Punta Cana is a collection of delicate, white-sand beaches formed from ancient fossilised coral and bleached limestone. This part of the island is often referred to as the ‘Coconut Coast’ so it’s no surprise to find miles of beachfront property studded with gently-swaying coconut trees. The best part is that even during Punta Cana's peak tourism season, these expansive beaches still manage to feel uncrowded, even semi-secluded.

Off the coast is the famous Saona Island, Punta Cana's most sought-after daytrip destination. Catamarans carry tourists to and from the island where they can visit a traditional fishing village and bask on the private beaches. Another popular marine destination is the Marinarium marine park, which hosts an array of water sports including snorkelling with sting rays and viewing aquatic life through the glass bottom of a catamaran.

All along the coast are a variety of exciting destinations. The famous Altos de Chavon artists' colony is the best known. Here tourists can explore carefully recreated colonial-age buildings fronting fine restaurants, atmospheric bars and a world-class museum. Of course, as a resort community Punta Cana also sports a full range of facilities including several casinos and golf courses.

There's no question that accommodation here is first rate. Each inclusive resort pampers its guests with full amenities and access to up-to-date information on local attractions. Staff are knowledgeable, and most accommodation includes a transportation package that helps guests accomplish each day’s activities. As the tourism market continues to surge, resorts are likely to reach capacity during peak months so advance online booking is essential.

Transportation is made convenient through the local Punta Cana International Airport. Flights connect to several US destinations, with a few flights as far north as Canada. Tourists will find that local transportation is hassle-free, whether dealing with package tourist shuttle buses (available through hotels), fixed-price taxis or hire cars. Public buses are also on-hand, though these are less practical for tourists.

Weather

The average year-round temperature in Punta Cana is 25°C, with cooler temperatures in the interior where the elevation is higher. Strong thunderstorms are common during the summer months, though Punta Cana sees less annual rainfall than the northern region of the country. Hurricanes are possible from June to November, an unpredictable season that is best avoided by tourists.

The best time to visit Punta Cana is from February to April, when average temperatures are pleasant and storms have subsided. Officially, the tourist season picks up in January, after which accommodation is likely to book up until April, making advance hotel reservations important for potential visitors.
