Puerto Plata International Airport has grown exponentially in the past decade, and today it sees an annual throughput in the millions. Flights connect to destinations across North America, with a few transatlantic flights to major European cities. Airlines serving Puerto Plata include Continental, Northwest Airlines, American Airlines, Premair and Lauda Air.
This single-terminal facility offers a range of facilities including currency exchange stations, ATMs, a post office, a bank, newsagents, restaurants, a coffee shop, and essential business services. The airport is 17 kilometres from Puerto Plata, and transportation between the two is accomplished by taxis and minivans. Some of the major hotels and resorts operate shuttle buses.

It is also possible to arrive in Puerto Plata via bus from Santa Domingo or other major resort cities in the country. Once based in the resort area, taxis are the preferred mode of transportation. Fares are supposedly fixed, but it’s still wise to check with the driver before boarding.

Minivans (guagua) are what locals use to get around. These are typically sized to carry eight passengers, though they are usually loaded well beyond this capacity. They can be boarded at any point along the route, and while locals know the expected fare, tourists will have to negotiate with the driver before boarding.
