As the first seaside resort cultivated in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata has had plenty of time to develop its hospitality and infrastructure. The area is known for the lively atmosphere on its sandy beaches, where merengue music plays. Backed by Mt Isabel, Puerto Plata is perfect for high-octane adventure sports as well as lackadaisical days on the beach.

As a rule, the Dominican Republic is best enjoyed out of doors, and Puerto Plata is no exception. Trails for walking, horseback riding and mountain biking are available across the region, and outfits in Puerto Plata can arrange group tours, independent excursions and all the necessary equipment. The waterfront is the main attraction, with wind-propelled water sports like windsurfing and kite surfing especially popular here on the north coast.

The Amber Museum with its remarkable collection of prehistoric insects and reptiles encased in amber is the area’s leading tourist attraction, but there are several other sites worth checking out. Fort San Felipe is the best remaining vestige of Spanish colonial times, while the modern side of town is situated on the Malecon waterfront road where shops and restaurants abound. Mt Isabel looms in the background, and tourists can reach the top by cable car in a mere seven minutes.

Despite the glossy, resort finish that characterises this part of the country, Puerto Plata maintains a number of venues where visitors can get in touch with the local culture and history. The Museum of Taino Art displays artefacts from the pre-Columbian culture that existed here. A more recent cultural phenomenon is explored in nearby Sousa at the Jewish Heritage Museum. Of course, one of the best ways to lose yourself in the cultural tides is by enjoying the music, and the local merengue is some of the best in the Caribbean.

Puerto Plata offers a variety of resort-style accommodation; many of these establishments cater to package tourists on an all-inclusive holiday. Independent hotels are also found along the waterfront, with humbler accommodation tucked into quaint houses in the historic quarter. Advance booking is important early in the year as the city becomes crowded during the peak tourism months.

Puerto Plata is conveniently reached via the local international airport, and the success of the tourism industry has led to rapid expansion in the past few years. Most visitors arrive directly from the North American mainland, though it is also possible to take a bus from Santa Domingo. Taxis are on hand for local transportation and guagua minivans ply routes into the countryside.

Weather

The average year-round temperature is Puerto Plata is around 25°C. Winters are usually warmer than summers, and temperatures drop slightly toward the interior where the elevation is higher. The high tourist season runs from February to March. January is also a popular month to visit, though rainfall is possible.

The wettest season lasts from June to November, and tourists are strongly discouraged from visiting at this time. Hurricanes may also sweep through in the summer, cancelling flights and forcing evacuation from coastal areas. Tourists who visit during these months are advised to pack waterproof gear and to stay informed concerning hurricane evacuation routes.
