Cyprus's second-largest city is situated on Akrotiri Bay on the southern part of the island. A city with roots extending thousands of years, Limassol boasts an array of archaeological sites and important museums. The port here is one of the most significant in the Mediterranean, though in recent years, tourism has rivalled the port in economic importance.
There are a wide variety of restaurants located on Limassol's eastern coastline and along Nicosia and Larnaca roads. Wine is a local staple; in the past, virtually every major household operated at least a modest winery. Those visiting during September can attend the yearly wine festival and sample a few local vintages.
Limassol's 14th-century castle was built over the site of a former Byzantine castle. Restored in the 1930s, the castle looms over the old harbour. The Cyprus Medieval Museum is inside, home to artefacts that date to the late Roman Empire and beyond. Visitors enter the castle over a drawbridge then proceed to the roof via a spiral staircase. Larnaca International Airport is also just over 64 kilometres from Limassol. This is Cyprus' busiest airport, with connections across Europe and into Asia and the Middle East. Facilities here are broader, with a greater selection of shopping and dining venues available. Bear in mind that this airport does not offer long-term parking facilities. Both Larnaca and Paphos airports are connected to Limassol via taxi and public buses, though many visitors opt to hire a car.
A smile and a handshake is the typical Cypriot greeting. Religion is deeply ingrained in the national psyche, with the majority practising Greek Orthodox and a significant minority practising Islam. Turkish Cypriots may avoid eye contact (a sign of respect), and devout Muslim men may decline to shake a woman's hand.
