We booked Hostal Valencia as an online special offer, and therefore luckiliy didn't pay that much for it. The location and appearance of the hotel is absolutely lovely, and when we arrived we were delighted. Problems soons started however. Apparently a large number of the other guest had been moved to the adjoining hotel (Comendador). It turned out the hotel had been having problems with their water mains, and we reurned the fisrt afternoon to find there was no running water. We were told the water could be out for days, and we would have to shower in the nextdoor hotel. The staff was very unhelpfull and uninterested. They didn't offer any solution or compensation for the fact that we would not be able to use the toilet at night or shower in our own room.

Most of the staff we met were friendly and helpful but one of the receptionists was very unhelpful and barely managed a smile!
Although we were booked into Valencia, our first few nights were in the Hotel El Commendador next door and the room(s) was superb. The room we stayed in in Valencia itself was also very nice.

This is a very funky, old hotel- with a beautiful courtyard full of plants and vines..... The rooms can't really be described or rated in a general way: the atmosphere is what counts. Everything is so authentic and true to the culture of Cuba. I would always prefer a hotel like this over a modern newly built one. The room I stayed in has a low ceiling and would be too hard to navigate for a very tall person, but I believe there are rooms with higher ceilings as well.I totally enjoyed my stay and I would recommend this hotel to anybody who is looking for a special place that is so central in old Havana!
