Colombia Introduction

Beautiful, exotic and virtually undiscovered Colombia is the gateway to South America, given its land-link to Panama. With coasts on both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, soaring mountain peaks in the Andes, fertile lowland plains, and jungles reaching into the Amazon rainforest there is much to enjoy in Colombia. The Colombian people are known for their graciousness and warmth, eager to make visitors feel at home and help them to enjoy their splendid country.
Travellers visiting Colombia can find quiet resorts on wonderful Caribbean beaches, sleek, modern hotels in Medellin, and cosy, quaint accommodation in thriving Bogota. Certainly one must not be dissuaded from visiting Colombia due to its colourful and distressed past, as it is a truly gorgeous and intoxicating destination. This South American gem gets overlooked by all but the most intrepid tourists, though it is becoming less so every year. With its varied landscapes, rich geography, and exotic flora and fauna, the country has developed a robust tourism industry that is constantly growing. National parks dot the country’s map and offer one a stunning array of choice to enjoy the outdoors.
Colombia’s two largest cities offer very different experiences to visitors. Bogota, located in the middle of the country and the nation’s capital is a huge metropolis of over seven million people. Perched on a high plateau in the Andes Mountains, the city is cooler than its northern sibling Medellin and is prone to weather fluctuations caused by El Nino effects. Known as the centre of business for Colombia, Bogota also houses most of the governmental institutions, as well as banking and communication organisations. Medellin, located close the northern coast and considerably warmer than Bogota, experiences milder tropical weather due to its elevation, which is higher than most Caribbean-region cities. Medellin offers muscular industry, wonderful culture and interesting historical sites. Both Bogota and Medellin are fast-paced with good transportation systems. Both also offer great cuisine, a plethora of entertainment options and thriving nightlife scenes.
With everything it has to offer, don’t wait too long to visit Colombia. It won’t remain a well-kept secret for long!

New Years Day
The first day of the year is typically used to recover from the wild and often violent New Year’s Eve festivities. The smaller street parties and public celebrations make this day a calmer and safer time to go out. Many activities are held in Bogota’s Plaza de Bolivar.

Air
Colombia has several airports but most international travellers will fly into Bogota or Cartagena. Avianca, the country’s national carrier, flies regularly from Miami and New York to Bogota. American, Continental and Delta also provide service between regional US air hubs and Bogota. Travellers from the UK can take British Airways direct to Colombia. Unfortunately, there are currently no direct flights from Canada or Australia.

Colombia has long had a reputation as a dangerous country. Although dangers still exist in many forms, safety conditions for visitors have improved greatly in recent years thanks to efforts by the current government. Most crimes against tourists involve pickpockets and bag-snatchers and can be avoided with a bit of common sense. Don’t flash your valuables in public, keep your cash protected and out of sight and your bag slung across your shoulder and you should be fine.
