Airports

Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (XMN) is located approximately six miles (10kms) from Xiamen city centre. Opened in 1983, it is now one of China’s ten busiest airports. Xiamen Airlines is based here, and several other airlines service the facility, providing links with 58 domestic and 17 international cities. A full range of facilities and amenities are available for passengers including banks, bureaux de change, bars, restaurants, shops and tourist information.

Transport to Xiamen centre is available by taxi or bus. Taxis are readily available and found just outside the Arrivals area. Airport bus service operates from a stop approximately 100m to the west of the Arrivals area, and public bus service leaves from a stop that’s 250m to the east of Arrivals. Public bus numbers 27, 37, 41, 81 and 91 make the trip to the centre, with the last bus departing around 22:30.
Public Transport

The local public bus network is extensive and service is good, but you’ll find that information is listed in Chinese only. If you’re going to Gulangyu, taking the ferry is recommended. Taxis are plentiful and service is inexpensive and comfortable. Drivers will usually turn on the meter, but if they don’t it’s best to look for another taxi. As most drivers don’t speak English, it’s a good idea to have the address of your destination written in Chinese to show to the driver.

Long-distance bus service can be a good choice for travelling long distances, although buses can be very crowded. Trains can be an even better choice, as service is faster and inexpensive. Around holiday times, trains can become very crowded.

It’s possible to hire a car in Xiamen, with a number of car hire companies represented in the city centre. Reservations in advance are recommended. It’s also possible to hire bicycles along the Island Ring Road, and a cycling tour of the area is a great way to see the sights at a more leisurely pace. Note that cyclists are required to pay a toll to use the Island Ring Road.
