Airports

Situated about four miles southeast of downtown Kunming, the Kunming Wujiaba International Airport is a busy airport that facilitates transportation between Kunming and a number of domestic destinations as well international destinations such as Vietnam and Thailand. Annually, the airport handles around six million passengers.

The airport has two terminals with ATMs located in various locations and a bank offering a full range of financial services including currency exchange. Restaurants and food outlets serving predominantly Chinese fare can be found in both terminals. A small selection of shopping outlets is also on hand.

Bus services connect the airport with downtown Kunming and also with the city’s train stations. Taxis are available from outside the Arrivals areas of both terminals.

Public Transport

Getting around by train is a possibility with a total of four stations serving the city. The main station is Nanyao Station and is located about four kilometres from the city centre. From here, it’s possible to take trains to destinations such as Dali and Wuxi. The second most significant of the four is the North Railway station which is located about three kilometres north of the city centre and provides a number of regional connections as well as services to Hanoi in Vietnam.

Buses provide transportation to both short and long-distance destinations with the Kunming Passenger Transport Bus Station being the best starting point for the majority of services. Buses cover most major destinations in the Yunnan province as well as destinations further afield such as Beijing, Shanghai, Fuzhou and Langzhou.

Taxis are commonly available and usually offer services based on metered fares; some drivers may try to start the journey without the meter so it’s wise that you insist that it’s used if in no other way than simply pointing to it. Few taxi drivers speak any English.
