Hainan is the name given to both the smallest province of the Republic of China and the largest island within that province. Invariably when somebody makes reference to Hainan, it is the major island that they are talking about unless they specify otherwise. The island is a popular holiday destination that benefits from warm tropical weather and a correspondingly tropical eco-system. It's these characteristics that have earned Hainan the nickname 'Hawaii of the Orient'.
For shopping, there are no shortage of opportunities to buy knick knacks, keepsakes and souvenirs while holidaying in Hainan, with some of the bigger cities such as Haikou and Sanya offering the best facilities. The busiest shopping street is Haixiu Avenue where you'll find an abundance of souvenir shops selling pearls, crystals, coconut shell sculptures, Li Brocade (cloth handmade by the Li), seashell products and pepper (black and white).
New Years Day: while the traditional Chinese New Year does not occur for another month, Hainan observes the celebrations of the western calendar with a nationwide holiday and typical get-togethers with family and friends.
Lying about 40kms to the west of Sanya City, the Ying Wang Tower is a hexagon_shaped Confucian temple that was constructed during the Qing Dynasty and was largely responsible for the introduction and establishment of Buddhism to the area. The writings of the eminent Jianzhen, a monk from the Tang Dynasty and of his disciples were also stored in the temple following their removal from Yazhou.
Located 25km from the city of Haikou, the Haikou Meilan Airport is the chief gateway to the island of Hainan, maintaining connections with a large number of mainland Chinese cities such as Beijing, Dalian, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Qingdao, Nanjing, Shanghai and Wuhan and also other Asian destinations such as Bangkok, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
The Chinese currency is called the renminbi (RMB), and there are bills in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 yuan. Yuan are commonly referred to as kwai.
