After being in Haikou for business a couple of years ago my wife and myself decided to spend 2 weeks vacation in Haikou. We booked the Crown Spa Resort as we did not want to go to Sanya and this seemed to be a great place.
And it was a great place ! Upon arrival we had a very good reception, check-in was done very quick and with no problems at all.
We had a sea-view room with a spectacular view over the hotel garden (or should I call it a parc ?) and the sea.
The room was spacious and had all what you can ask for including broadband internet and a sufficient number of power outlets for the electronic toys we carried with us..
The service was excellent.
We had every possible support from the assistant manager who took good care of us. Whenever we had questions she was there, and she gave us valuable recommendations about where to go in Haikou. She helped us to arrange a 3 day tour around Hainan and that confirmed our choice the Crown Spa rather than going to Sanya. Where Sanya is more the place if you are into binge-drinking, night-bars and drinking spots Haikou and especially the Crown Spa is an excellent place to learn Chinese hospitality.
We never had a hotel pool of this size - (approx. 50m) and the best of all was the Spa. A huge place with natural hot springs and every therapy you could think of. Both of us used it 4 times and it was great - excellent massage (traditional Chinese massage, Thai massage, Aromatherapy, .....), a great sauna and a dip in the hot pools.
The food was excellent - especially the barbecue and the noodle bar with fresh made chinese noodles. No way to describe the barbecue - one must experience it. Worth to mention the good selection of Australian and international wines.
An excellent service was the free hotel shuttle to Haikou downtown - going back and forth by a very reliable time table.
Would we do it again ? - Certainly yes.

Book the hotel car to pick you up at the airport, few taxi drivers know where it is and most speak no English. Excellent hotel for a short stay, in a quiet location. Chinese guests can be a bit noisy in the evenings but that applies to any resort hotel on Hainan. Food options are a little unimaginative, fast internet access at low cost. I always use this hotel when in Haikou.
Comfortable and well equipped but corridor noise can be an issue.
Great beachside location with good swimming pool, sea probably not clean enough for swimming and far to rough on all of my visits. Restaurants and bar rather unimaginative but OK for 1 or 2 nights, no other F & B outlets in immediate area. All the staff try hard to please, not quite up to the best of Western standards yet but getting there and the level of spoken English improves with every return visit. Quite beachfront location, 20 - 30 minutes drive from airport depending on traffic, not much else in immediate vicinity of hotel. Hotel limo service is good, reliable and affordable by western standards. I havn't seen any public transport in the area although China Southern Airlines run a shuttle bus to the city centre sometimes. Most taxi drivers do not know this hotel or where it is located. Most taxi drivers speak no English.
There is an OK Chinese menu and a rather dull Western menu with a Brazilian Barbecue and buffet each evening. In summer this migrates to an outdoor terrace overlooking the beach but in winter is on the patio A HotelTravel.com Member, France
