
Dongguan doesn’t have its own international airport, yet Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is only an hour away to the west and Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport about the same distance to the south. Trains and buses run from both Guangzhou and Shenzhen to Dongguan. In addition, Hong Kong International Airport is 60 miles to the south and is served by ferry.
Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is an important Chinese air hub serving around 25 million passengers a year from over 100 domestic and international cities. Facilities at the airport include banks and ATMs, duty-free shopping, restaurants and bars, medical services, business centres, left luggage, a post office and mother and infant rooms. Guangzhou Baiyun is only 30 miles from Dongguan and buses, trains and taxis offer the fast transfer times.
Many travellers to Dongguan choose to fly into Hong Kong, which has even more flight options than Guangzhou and also allows for visa-free entry to citizens from the US, Europe and Canada. Hong Kong’s new airport has state of the art facilities and exceptional transport options. Buses, ferries and trains serve Dongguan from Hong Kong although you will need to pass the often busy Hong Kong/China border. With this in mind, travelling to Dongguan by ferry from Hong Kong is more convenient.
There are five main bus lines in Dongguan (L1 to L5), with L1 (number 58) running from Keyuan Garden to Humen; L2 (number 59) from Dongguan Bus Station to Jinsha Park (Shilong Town); L3 (number) from Dongguan Bus Station to Hermit Villa (Changping Town); L4 (number 89) from Dongguan Bus Station to Guanyin Mountain National Forest Park (Zhangmutou Town) and L5 from Dongguan Bus Station to Green World.

Taxis are also widely available in Dongguan and fares are quite reasonable, with a flag-fall price and a per-kilometre rate after that. Getting to and from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is best done by taxi.
You can also get about Dongguan by bicycle. The Chinese are avid bike riders as cycling it is the cheapest form of travel plus the environment doesn’t get polluted to boot. Although the main roads in Dongguan are far too busy to cycle along, there is a large network of minor roads, pedestrianised streets and parks. Bicycles can be rented by the day.Car hire in China isn’t as straightforward as it is in most countries and tourists aren’t permitted to drive unless they have a Chinese license. You can, however, rent a car with driver if you fancy having a look around the greater Dongguan area. The Licheng Development Zone just outside town is particularly beautiful. The best way to hire a car when visiting Dongguan is to book online ahead of time and to pick the vehicle up at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.
