Besides the recent introduction of Han peoples into Hebei, the province remains an important centre for the Mongol and Manchu ethnic minorities. Chengde city has been brought closer into contact with Beijing thanks to the new Jingcheng Expressway that connects the two cities. Few foreign tourists make it all the way here; the city is sometimes seen as more Chinese because of this. The Putuo Zongcheng Temple, which was modelled after the Potala in Lhasa, Tibet, is a must-see.
