Top Things to See

Most people come to Edmonton for the West Edmonton Mall, easily the province’s main attraction in the winter, with everything from sea lion shows, amusement parks, and a casino, as well as innumerable shops. Other major Edmonton attractions include the fun TELUS World of Science, Chinatown and the buzzing Old Strathcona area.

Chinatown
Centred on 97th Street east of downtown, Edmonton’s Chinatown has that familiar Chinese look like so many other Chinatowns in North America and is great for a wander. The whole place is lined with authentic Chinese eateries and speciality Chinese shops, and features an elaborate Chinese gateway and colourful pagoda-style roofs.

Downtown Edmonton
Redeveloped and restored in the 1990s, downtown Edmonton is the heart of the city; a lively downtown area containing loads of shops, restaurants, and the Arts District. Downtown lies to the north of the North Saskatchewan River and highlights include the Alberta Legislature Building, City Hall, Art Gallery of Alberta, Churchill Square, great swathes of parkland, and Hotel MacDonald.

Fort Edmonton Park
Fort Edmonton Park is a big attraction for the whole family, featuring four periods of Edmonton's history. The Fort Edmonton fur trading post dates from the 18th century and is a huge wooden structure featuring blacksmiths, bakers, and other tradesmen. Frontier Edmonton on 1885 Street is complete with saloons and the Jasper House Hotel, while 1905 Street and 1920 Street mirror Edmonton’s boom years.

Old Strathcona also has the Farmers’ Market on Saturdays as well as the liveliest nightlife in the city.

TELUS World of Science
This advanced science centre features a huge planetarium, an IMAX theatre, an observatory and several high-tech exhibits. The most interesting exhibits include a robotics display and a journey through the human body, while aspiring detectives might like to try out Mystery Avenue.
