The downtown area of Calgary is relatively safe, presenting few problems for tourists. Panhandlers are commonplace but usually harmless. If out late, it is advised to walk in well-lit areas or take a taxi to avoid any problems. Visitors are advised to ensure their luggage and valuables are well supervised at all times, as bag snatchings sometimes occur. During the winter months, the roads and footpaths can become extremely slippery; care should be taken to avoid any accidents.

The national language of Canada is English, which is spoken in Calgary.

Canada uses the Canadian dollar (CAD), with CAD$1.00 equal to 100 cents.
Canada is generally laid-back with casual and relaxed customs. The handshake is normal and an appropriate greeting when meeting somebody for the first time. When entering shops or restaurants, pleasantries are not expected but warmlywelcomed. People’s general appearance differs greatly, and casual clothing is usually accepted for most establishments apart from exclusive clubs or expensive restaurants where formal attire is required.

Etiquette is relaxed in Canada, but politeness and good manners will go a long way. If conducting business in Canada, it is important to be friendly and slightly reserved in your behaviour. Formal attire should be worn for business lunches or dinners and proper table manners used. Public drunkenness is looked down upon in most situations and it is best to limit your alcohol consumption.

Everyone that enters Canada must have a valid passport and meet the set requirements or be in possession of a valid tourist visa. Visitors from the US can enter with just a birth certificate or photo ID. Depending on your country of birth, a tourist visa may be necessary. Visas can be obtained at any Canadian embassy or consulate around the world.
