Varna is the largest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, and is one of the top beach resort destinations in the region. The city offers a wide array of top hotels and resorts as well as a number of budget conscious accommodation. Varna is home to a number of interesting attractions including the very strange and eerie Museum of Medical History. The annual Vaarnesko Lyato (Varna Summer) is a fantastic music festival that attracts top performers from around the globe. It is important to make hotel bookings in advance especially during the summer music festival.

One of Europe’s most ancient centres of civilisation, Varna has been an active player on the world stage for millennia. The Romans called the city Odessa, but there was civilisation flourishing here long before the days of the empire. Today’s visitors come not only for the rich cultural attractions, but also for the beaches and resort lifestyle available here on the Black Sea coast.
Varna has a good mix of outdoor and family activities. The Fanagoria Settlement offers the best of both, with its recreated ancient village where children enjoy visiting different tents and learning about Sixth century Bulgaria. The Dolphinarium and Planetarium are also fun for families. Possible outdoor activities include scuba diving in the Black Sea, visiting the 50 million-year-old Stone Forest or relaxing at Varna Lake.

Varna’s iconic Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral is the world’s largest Bulgarian Orthodox church. It opened 100 years ago and looms proudly over the city centre; however, there are several other notable churches in town. A range of attractions are found in the Sea Garden, namely the Naval Museum, the Dolphinarium and the Planetarium. For a journey into the region’s past, head to one of the rock monasteries in the countryside. These fascinating structures were hewn from massive rock faces and served as places of worship for many centuries.

Varna is the gateway to Bulgaria’s Black Sea resort area and the most convenient way to arrive is by air. The city’s airport is the second-largest airport in Bulgaria, offering connections to more than 100 cities across Europe and Russia. Major airlines servicing the airport include British Airways, Bulgaria Air, SkyEurope and Austrian Airliens. Wizz Air Bulgaria provides discount service to destinations across the country.
