Varna is the gateway to Bulgaria’s Black Sea resort area and the most convenient way to arrive is by air. The city’s airport is the second-largest airport in Bulgaria, offering connections to more than 100 cities across Europe and Russia. Major airlines servicing the airport include British Airways, Bulgaria Air, SkyEurope and Austrian Airliens. Wizz Air Bulgaria provides discount service to destinations across the country.
The recent success of Varna’s tourism industry caught the airport off guard and plans for expansion are underway. Onsite facilities include limited restaurants and shopping outlets, along with ATMs and basic banking and business facilities. Travel to Varna is possible by taxi or hotel shuttle.
Varna is well connected to other regional hubs. Buses run to Istanbul, Athens and a number of other cities throughout Europe. The main bus terminal is located a mile outside of the city centre. The local port is especially busy, carrying passengers to and from the Black Sea ports of Bourgas, Blachik, Slunchev and Nessebar. Bulgaria boasts an extensive rail network, and travel time to the capital city, Sofia, is seven hours.

Public transportation around the city is convenient. Dozens of public buses connect the central waterfront area with outlying resorts. Trolley buses are especially useful for tourists, as they provide quick and convenient transport to most of the main attractions.
