At times credited with having the world’s highest number of churches per capita, Nesebar, Bulgaria is home to the fifth-sixth century Church of St Sophia and 11th-century Church of John the Baptist, to name just a couple. What’s more, the town is home to the country’s best Black Sea beaches. Situated at a point where the fringes of empires have met, Bulgaria has had Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Russian and Soviet overlords. But perhaps the native Thracian culture has made the most significant mark here.
