Rio de Janeiro Introduction
Stretched along the Yucatan Peninsula, the Riviera Maya is a popular tourism region of great natural beauty and cultural treasures. Historically, this region began at the city of Playa del Carmen and ended at the village of Tulum. Today Riveria Maya extends further to encompass the towns of Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Felipe Carrillo Puerto. The Riviera Maya is famous for its large resorts as well as historical boutique hotels around the beaches and along highway 307. The sea is the major attraction of the Riviera Maya with a wealth of beach and water activities dependent on the Belize Barrier Reef, which begins near Cancun and continues along the whole length of the Riviera Maya continuing southward to Guatemala, making it the second largest reef in the world. Activities at the most popular places include snorkelling, scuba diving, swimming in caves, swimming with dolphins, jet skiing, zip-lining, horse riding, and guided jungle tours. Archaeology also draws many tourists who seek to explore the fascinating sites at Tulum, Xcaret and Xel-Ha.
