Pinto Martins International Airport is the chief gateway to the city and the means by which most foreign visitors arrive. The airport is only a decade old so presents a modern appearance and is equipped with a good selection of contemporary facilities. The majority of destinations served by the airport are South American, although there are direct flights from several US and Italian cities.
Transportation to the city is available by either public bus or taxi; the former can be accessed from the basement and the latter from the first floor. Car rental offices are also on hand for visitors wishing to make their own way to the city.

The Fortaleza Metro underground rapid transport system is due to begin running in 2010 but for now, the city’s bus service provides the best means of getting around the city. The network is extensive and relatively cheap and most vehicles are air-conditioned. All major tourist attractions can be reached by bus. Long distance bus services provide connections with most major destinations in the country.
Taxis are widely available. Fares are metered but in the case where a journey is likely to go over R$10, the fare can be negotiated. Motorbike taxis are also in operation and are cheaper than regular taxis but there’s a danger element involved in using them.
While it is possible to rent a car to get around, driving in the city can be challenging making travelling by local bus or taxi preferable. There are, however, many car hire shops dotted across the city.
