Brought to the world’s attention in the 1960s by French starlet Brigitte Bardot, Buzios has since grown from a reclusive fishing village to Brazil’s most sought-after resort destination. Local elite and the international jet-set flock here for world-class hospitality, luxurious beaches and a thriving night scene. These assets, combined with the diverse, international flavour of the community, make Buzios an unparalleled holiday destination.

The beaches are Buzios’ central fixture. There are more than 20 in the area, the busiest of which feature wake boarding, banana boating and even surfing. Schooners and glass-bottomed catamarans depart Armacao Beach at the city centre and take tourists on tours of the coastline. Chartered fishing boats are also on hand, carrying passengers to waters teeming with snapper, anchovies and grouper.

Scuba diving is well supported with dozens of outfitters offering lessons, certification and gear. Buzios’ warm, clear waters often get compared to those of the Caribbean. There are also a number of reefs in shallow waters that can be viewed with a mask and a snorkel. For land-based activities, consider mountain biking, hiking or horseback riding in the backcountry.

Rua das Pedras is the central pedestrian thoroughfare in Buzios. It follows the waterfront and hosts countless shops, restaurants, clubs and even art galleries. The avenue extends as far as Ossos Beach. The upscale restaurants here are especially eclectic, serving world-class cuisine in beachfront, often open-air environs.

Given its resort status, it comes as no surprise that Buzios is overflowing with accommodation options. Large-scale hotels dominate the industry, offering comprehensive amenities and world-class hospitality. There are also smaller, privately owned hotels and cosy time-shares. Be sure to book online in advance, especially if planning a visit during peak tourism months (December and January).

Getting to Buzios involves an international connection through one of Brazil’s large international airports. Sao Paulo’s airport is busy, though tourists bound specifically for Buzios usually connect through Rio de Janeiro (160 kilometres away) and then board a two-hour transfer shuttle to Buzios. Buses also connect Buzios to other Brazilian cities, while taxis handle most local ground transportation.

Weather

Buzios’s tropical climate is a perfect complement to the city’s expansive beaches. Here in the southern hemisphere, average temperatures approach 30°C between the months of November and February. Temperatures settle comfortably into the mid-20s from May to September. Comfortable ocean breezes take the edge off the heat in every season, and sunbathing is popular year-round.

Periodic rain falls throughout the year, peaking in December and January. The best time to visit is in the shoulders of summer, specifically from March to June and from September to November, although Buzios can be visited at any time. Temperatures are most comfortable at these times, and off-season bargains are available. Peak periods of tourism coincide with the hottest months, December and January.
