Bosnia and Herzegovina Introduction

Bosnia-Herzegovina, with its turbulent recent past, offers a fascinating destination for visitors seeking unconventional foray. From stunning old mosques and monument to amphitheatres and Catholic shrines, one can find an abundance of historical sights to visit and admire. Perhaps most wonderful is the rebuilt bridge in Mostar, what used to be a pre-war ancient overpass. Now re-opened to the public, a walk across it inspires hope of new beginnings. The countryside varies from woodlands and mountains to rolling hills and a short Adriatic coastline.

Heart shaped, Bosnia-Herzegovina is located in the centre of south-eastern Europe. One only needs to know that the country is a literal meeting place between Eastern and Western civilizations to understand the underlying currents of conflict that occasionally rises up in the region and in the country itself. Not a large country, Bosnia-Herzegovina offers a wide range of attractive landscapes as well as a myriad of cultures, traditions and inhabitants. Due to its central location and its Adriatic Sea coastline, the country is reached with relative ease by any mode of transport.

Bosnia-Herzegovina’s capital city is Sarajevo, fixed in one of the country’s more mountainous regions. Famed for its idyllic Winter Olympics of 1984, the town is more well-known for strife it endured during military maneuvers in the 1990’s. However, today it is completely rebuilt and offers a wide array of accommodation, with visitors spoilt for choice between luxury five star hotels and smaller, budget-friendly lodging. It’s not uncommon to find smaller hotels offering a family atmosphere where guests are often invited to drink coffee or wine on the terrace with their hosts.

Like many former Eastern European countries, Bosnia-Herzegovina still retains elements of its communist past in its culture and infrastructure. Just as many of its surrounding neighbours, the country is known for its friendly inhabitants and open hospitality. Winters can be cold and snowy and summers hot, so good planning is necessary for the perfect trip. Sarajevo is quite popular, so be sure to book your accommodation early in order to assure your desired choice. With so much to explore and sights to see, Bosnia-Herzegovina is an excellent choice for a holiday.
