Brussels has a relatively mild maritime climate that brings a high incidence of wet, grey weather. July and August are the warmest months of the year, with temperatures reaching around 22oC, while winter temperatures are much more daunting, with so-called ‘highs’ of between 4 and 7oC.
Brussels' offers infinite shopping opportunities at its many markets, designer stores, antique shops and comic book centres, with major shopping areas including the pedestrianised rue Neuve; the area around the Grand Place; Place du Grand Sablon; and Place du Jeu de Balle. Avenue Louise is the city's most luxurious shopping drag, often compared to Rodeo drive and the Champs Elysees.
Antiques Fair: an eclectic assortment of antique artefacts, utilities, jewellery and decorative items are displayed at Belgium’s largest antiques fair, put on by The Royal Chamber of Belgian Antiques in the recently refurbished Tour & Taxis district of Brussels. Antiques dealers from all over the country come to display their wares at this prestigious annual event, which is strictly monitored by a team of experts to ensure that only genuine, high quality goods are traded.
The Horta Museum provides a fascinating glimpse into the life of one of Belgium's most respected sons - the architect Victor Horta, whose Art Nouveau structures are dotted across the city. The museum, which was once his home and studio, has been fantastically preserved and features an array of superb design features and a wealth of information pertaining to the architect's life and works.
Brussels International Airport is one of Europe's major transportation hubs, serving approximately millions of travellers on an annual basis. The airport is efficient and modern, with plentiful refreshment venues and passenger facilities as well as an impressive exhibition of artworks in one of its terminals.
Belgian people are mad about fine food and often entertain at home or socialise at the city's many fine restaurants. If you receive a written invitation from a local, you should write a formal response and be sure to arrive punctually at the prescribed time. Dress stylishly in smart clothes and err on the side of conservatism if you are in any doubt as to what to wear.
