Brugge has a relatively compact downtown area, with most major sights concentrated in the centrally located 'golden triangle'. The best way to see the city's attractions is on foot, but those who prefer to take public transport can make use of the many buses and taxis. Trains and coaches provide transportation to other Belgian towns and cities as well as limited European destinations, while Brussels International Airport receives international flights.

Airports

Located northeast of the Belgian capital, Brussels International Airport, also known as Zaventem Airport, is the main point of entry for Brugge, receiving most international flights to the country and located approximately 120kms from the city centre, or 1 hour and 30 minutes by train. Over 180 destinations worldwide are served by flights from Zaventem Airport. There is also a small airport at Ostend, 26kms from Brugge, which is served by a direct Ryanair flight from London.

Brussels Airport has all the services and facilities expected of a major air hub including full banking services, business amenities, tourist information services and passenger conveniences. ATMs and bureaux de change are available in the Arrivals Hall as well as a post office, which is open from 08:00 to 19:00 on weekdays.

A good selection of bars and restaurants are available – visitors have the choice of an Italian restaurant, a seafood restaurant, fast-food outlets, wine and tapas bars and a generous scattering of café bars serving an extensive selection of local and foreign beers. Both duty-free and regular stores are on hand for all your shopping needs, with outlets offering a selection of gifts, books, travel accessories, clothing, jewellery and specialty items. Medical services are available and disabled passengers are catered for with special facilities.

Conference and business facilities are available at the Sky Hall Reception Room, while the Regus Skyport Meeting Centre provides meeting rooms, secretarial services and internet access and the Airport Forum offers a range of additional telecommunications and business services.

Brugge can be reached from Zaventem Airport by means of Belgian Railways trains, which take roughly 1 hour, 30 minutes to reach the Flemish city. Alternatively, visitors who prefer to travel by road can hire a car from any of the airport rental agencies and drive to Brugge via the three-lane E40 highway, with a journey time of just over 1 hour on average, or arrivals can take a coach to Brugge from Brussels.

Travellers coming from London have the option of taking a direct Ryanair flight from the British capital to Ostend-Brugge Airport, situated just 26kms from the city centre and accessible via a 20-minute bus ride from Brugge . This is one of the most convenient and least expensive ways of reaching Brugge from the UK.

Ostend-Brugge Airport is primarily a cargo airport served by a limited selection of airlines and consisting of a single passenger terminal. The airport serves around 1,500,000 travellers annually and encompasses a post office, exchange counter, restaurants, cafés, bars and snack outlets, a newsagent/tobacconist, a baby-changing room, a first-aid service, disabled persons' amenities and a tourist help desk. The airport is accessible by car from Brugge central via the E40 highway.

Public Transport

Traffic congestion has long been a problem in Brugge and visitors to the city are advised to make use of the public transport system to explore the city. Alternatively, those arriving by car can utilise the conveniently located car parks (five in the inner city and several along the ring road) and either walk or take buses from the car parks to their chosen destination. Driving in Brugge is tricky, even for those acquainted with the city; its network of one-way roads, restricted routes, narrow streets and frequent traffic jams make it extremely difficult for strangers to navigate the city by car.

Brugge's main railway station is located just two kilometres south of downtown, with connections to all major Belgian cities. Trains travelling to Brussels-Central Station take about an hour to make the journey. Trains to the sandy coast take only 15 minutes from Brugge. The walk from Brugge train station to the city centre takes just 10 minutes and the route is also served by a plethora of buses.

Brugge's compact and pedestrianised downtown makes it an easy and pleasant place to explore on foot. You can discover ancient bridges, peaceful canals, and charming little lanes passing by old stone houses and churches.

If you're not keen to wander the city sights on foot, bicycles are the next best way to go. Bikes can be rented at train stations and elsewhere throughout the city. The old town is closed to traffic which makes exploring by bicycle utterly enjoyable. Often bikes can be taken on trains free of charge. There are also secure bicycle lockers dispersed around the city.

For a real treat, take a horse-drawn carriage around town. They can be hired anywhere you see one and are a pleasant way to see the sights.

Buses are another option of getting around Brugge. Two kinds of bus tickets are offered – de stadskaart (city card), for trips around the inner city, and de lijnkaart (line card), for trips outside the city centre. It is also possible to purchase an all-day pass for unlimited trips on any of the city buses; this is a good option if you plan on an intensive day of sightseeing. Tickets are available on the buses or at most newspaper stands. Discounts are available for groups of over 10 people and for children under 12 years old; kids under six travel free. The main inner city bus stops are located at the Markt, Wollestraat, Biekorf and Kuiperstraat.

Taxis
are widely available in the city and are a quick and convenient means of getting from A to B. Taxi stands are located at the Markt and at Stationsplein.
