Since the year 1150, the historic city of Brugge has been attracting thousands of visitors to one of the greatest religious pageants in Europe, the Holy Blood Procession. The relic of the Holy Blood was brought to Brugge by the Count of Flanders in 1149. Since then, the relic has been venerated by a mile-long procession of 1,500 Brugge citizens; many in colourful medieval attire carry the relic through town in a beautiful procession that re-enacts scenes from the Bible through the coming of Christ and His Resurrection to the return of the Count of Flanders to Brugge. Except for being in hiding during the two World Wars the relic has never left Brugge and is kept in the Basilica of Saint Basil in the Burg Square. Spaces along the route of the procession should be reserved well in advance through the Tourist Office in Brugge: +32 50 44 8686.
This folkloric event is known for being one of the oldest events of this kind in Belgium. Every year enormous crowds invade the town of Mons. The whole city participates and assists Saint Georges riding on horseback with eight chinchins to protect the city from the horrible dragon.
On the fourth weekend of August, the "Ducasse" festivities take place in Ath's historical centre. For a few days, the whole town is vibrant with enthusiasm for its traditions and folklore. On Saturday, after Goliath's wedding, the giant fights against the shepherd boy David. On Sunday, there is a procession with several giants, floats and picturesque groups going through the streets of the city.
