International Transport

Air
Barbados-Grantley Adams International Airport is situated in Christ Church, 16kms to the southeast of Bridgetown, the island’s capital. It is a small airport by international standards, operating a single terminal which dispatches and receives flights to and from US, UK and European destinations with American Airlines, Continental Airlines, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, handling the bulk of the traffic.

The airport offers fairly basic facilities although all the essentials are covered and passengers will find a bank and a bureau de change for financial transactions, a post office, a bar, a restaurant and a small selection of shops.

For ground transportation, visitors will find buses connecting with the city from outside of the terminal building. Services operate every 10 minutes and take 45 minutes to reach their destination.

Sea
There are no traditional ferry services operating from or to Barbados, however many cruise liners make stops at the port at Bridgetown allowing cruise passengers to get off and explore the area for the day or sometimes for several days.

Domestic Transport

Bus
Buses provide the cheapest means of getting around and are visitor-friendly being easily negotiable and covering a fairly extensive part of the island. Government run buses are the most economical and provide the largest number of routes, while private minibuses which tend to operate mainly in the larger city areas, are also available.

Car
Car rental is available both at the airport and from companies in popular tourist areas such as Bridgetown. Cars drive on the left in the Barbados and a road network is available that covers most of the island. Major highways and roads in significant cities, are, on the whole, good, however as you move into rural areas you need to be prepared for potholes and similar obstacles.

Taxi
Taxis are readily available in Barbados and while they are un-metered, fares are fixed by the government so in theory, visitors shouldn’t end up getting ripped off, it is advisable however to establish the fare for your journey before you undertake it, so as to avoid any potential disagreements.
