Salzburg has a number of entertaining offers that will enhance their minds, lighten up their eyes and burn off extra energy. The Museum of Modern Art offers children's workshops and tours of the museum. Children can also enjoy exploring the Hohensalzburg Fortress. And what kid wouldn’t love to spend the day in the Toy Museum or at the zoo.


Hohensalzburg Fortress
Children will have a great time exploring this fortress that majestically sits above the city rooftops. This 900 year-old fortress is the biggest fortress in all of Europe.


Mirabell Palace and Dwarves Garden

Puppet Theatre
Kasperi Puppet Theatre is a collection of musical instruments and a toy museum. Children will be delighted to see an old style puppet show. www.salzburgmuseum.at


Salzburg Zoo
The zoo houses exotic animals from all over the world and replicates their natural habitat. Kids can spend time watching the primates play or they can watch the piranhas eat everything in their path.


Toy Museum
The Toy Museum has a special exhibit, "Toys from A to Z" that will totally enthral the children. The exhibit also shows the growth and development of writing from Egyptian hieroglyphs to today’s computer characters. There are toys dating back hundreds of years. The museum also offers a play corner and a marvellous paper theatre.


Outdoor Activities


There are many opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities in Salzburg. A holiday in Salzburger Land offers a large range of sporting, hiking and leisure activities for those searching for sporting relaxation. There are also numerous golf venues for the golf enthusiast.


Cycling
The bike paths along the Saalach River runs through the villages and allows the cyclist to see the locals and their homes up close. Here you can take a relaxing ride or you can take the more challenging path up the mountain.


Golf
Salzburg offers some of the most beautiful greens in Europe. Golf lovers will find Salzburg picturesque courses the perfect setting for a stylish game. The city offers 13 courses for beginning players as well as expert golfers.


Hiking
Saalach Valley has some wonderfully scenic hiking trails and is a great sport for the entire family. The more adventurous hikers may want to hike/climb the majestic Salzburger Mountains.


Skiing
Saalach Valley has some very impressive ski slopes for the winter skiing enthusiast. It makes no difference whether you are an expert skier or if it is your first time on the slopes as the have cable cars, ski lifts and kiddie hills all on offer.

How about cooling off on a hot summers day in the exhilaratingly breezy Salzburger mountains or you can spend time soaking in the invigorating waters of the Saalachtal's natural bathing area.

Dining & Shopping


Since Salzburg has been part of Austria for over 200 years, a great deal of the cuisine is a combination of flavours from Bavarian and Austrian. Additionally, Salzburg fare has borrowed from the traditional Hungarian spices and Mediterranean seasonings and infused them in their local cuisine.


Restaurants are plentiful in Salzburg as many of the medieval townhouses have been transformed into restaurants that exude old-time character and charm. The majority of the restaurants offer the heavy traditional meat-based Australian meal and traditional dishes including the famous Wiener Schnitzel. The Schnitzel (steak, thick slices of meat, pork or beef) is prepared with flour, eggs and breadcrumbs, cooked to golden perfection and served with potatoes and cranberry sauce.


Salzburg is the home to a multitude of elegant cafés which offer delicious pastries, teas, coffees. Many of the cafés and bar for that fact serve full meals throughout the day and you can sample another Salzburg specialty, the Mozartkügeln; balls of chocolate-covered marzipan.


The city also has a very vibrant nightlife with clubs and bars sprinkled throughout the city. The Rudolfskai area is a club strips that attracts the young locals and tourist while the area around Giselakai has a clutch of stylish bars attracting a slightly older patrons.


Salzburg is also famous for its beer as it is part of the Germany’s “Beer Belt”. They have maintained the great German brewing tradition, thus producing excellent beers. Salzburg is home to one of Europe's most famous beer destinations: Augustiner Bräu.

Salzburg offers a wide variety of stores and great shopping opportunities. Specializing in traditional clothing, jewellery, glassware, handicrafts and Austrian dolls, Salzburg truly has something for everyone.


Getreidegasse is an area that must not be missed. Here you can explore the frenzied commotion of the farmer's market where vendors and farmers from all over the province display their wares. 

In Salzburg, shopping can be a wonderfully intoxicating experience. As you walk through the narrow lanes and zigzag paths of this historic city you will soon forget about the mega-malls and chain stores, you will simply enjoy the serenity of lovely, treasure-finding shops and sweet-smelling boutiques.
