Innsbruck Introduction

The magnificent city of Innsbruck is one of the most famous destinations in the country for international visitors. The city has a plethora of diverse attractions including beautiful scenery, stunning architectural gems, wonderful hiking and trekking opportunities and top-class skiing. The city also has an excellent tourism infrastructure with a wide selection of hotels available that range from top-class 5-star hotels and resorts to budget rooms. One of the most famous attractions in Innsbruck is the Imperial Palace, which is dominated by a set of domed towers. This palace is a remarkable example of Baroque secular architecture. The structure has four wings and is painted in a stunning white and gold motif. Another top noteworthy attraction is the Ambras Palace, one of the foremost palaces in Austria. The opulent structure is divided into lower and upper sections; the lower contains a museum and gallery, while the upper contains a spectacular collection of imperial artworks.Gourmets will enjoy the range in eateries from lavish and expensive hotel dining rooms to the more reasonably priced and friendly local restaurants. Hotels in Innsbruck are generally good to excellent in standard and offer internationally recognised services, making it an excellent holiday destination choice.

Innsbruck is one of those rare cities that has equal amounts of rich culture and natural beauty. Nearly all of its attractions are either historical buildings dating to the mediaeval age or magnificent alpine locations. The Old Town (Altstadt) is where most of the urban highlights are clustered, with the shining Golden Roof anchoring a district of churches, palaces, and other interesting sites. Every day at 10:30 the entire Altstadt becomes pedestrian-only, to the delight of visitors. Head into the surrounding Alps and there are Tyrolean villages, castles and stunning outdoor scenery at every turn.

Innsbruck’s airport, Flughafen Innsbruck-Kranebitten, is located just three kilometres from the heart of the city and handles daily direct flights from every major Austrian city as well as many other European destinations. North American travellers, however, will need to make a connection somewhere in Europe before heading on to Innsbruck as there are no direct flights. Munich’s airport is the closest international connection and runs regular shuttle buses direct from the airport to Innsbruck. Tyrolean Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Finnair and EasyJet are the primary carriers operating out of Innsbruck.
