Tiny Port Douglas, population 1,000, is an ideal base for exploring big natural attractions, particularly the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, both of which are World Heritage Sites. Find a room near the action with HotelTravel.com.

The intrinsic character of this seaside village has been wonderfully preserved and nothing taller than a palm tree is allowed to be built, making it quaint, charming, low-key and relaxing. Holiday activities and sightseeing options include a golf course and an old can train which provides a fun alternative to walking between the marina and the village centre. The unique rainforest habitat is where you can experience life in a tropical forest at birds-eye level, observing native wildlife from treetop walkways. If you are a ‘water-nut’, there are yacht and power boat cruises, dive and fishing boat excursions departing daily for reefs, islands and cays, while day tours and safaris cover the coastal and inland regions.

The quaint fishing village of Port Douglas is located a mere one hour’s drive from Cairns, in one of Australia’s most sought-after regions. Hugged by the Wet Tropics rainforests on one side and the Great Barrier Reef on the other, Port Douglas is situated in the only place in the world where two UNESCO heritage sites touch.
While Port Douglas doesn’t have many all-out facilities that cater for children, the region is home to a rich variety of wildlife that thrills younger visitors. Kids are presented with opportunities to touch koalas and see crocodiles tucking into their lunch. For more mainstream entertainment, consider visiting Cairns, where the infrastructure is more thorough.
Port Douglas hosts a number of annual events that encourage tourists to learn about colonial and Aboriginal heritage. There are several opportunities for visitors to get involved. The Reef and Rainforest Carnivale is Port Douglas’ premier annual event, with many of the other festivities taking place in Cairns or further abroad in Queensland. Parades, concerts and markets are common ways in which locals celebrate holidays.
Port Douglas’ excellent location between the Great Barrier Reef, Daintree National Forest and Cape Tribulation makes it an outstanding place to enjoy some of Australia’s finest natural habitat. Countless tour operators take tourist overland and undersea to encounter the wildlife and spectacular scenery first-hand. Guided tours of the inner and outer reefs are handled primarily by Quicksilver’s fleet of catamarans.

Cairns International Airport is Port Douglas' closest port of entry. An important gateway into the Northern Tropics region of Queensland, this facility handles both international and domestic connections. Flights connect Cairns International Airport with Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea; Tokyo, Japan; Incheon, South Korea; and Auckland, New Zealand.
