Australia Day: falling on the 26th of the month, Australia Day in Kakadu sees lively celebrations at the region’s hotels. Holidaymakers can join with locals in celebrating this important national holiday.

Easter: is celebrated by Kakadu’s residents in the same manner as it is in other parts of the country. The religiously inclined attend services throughout Holy Week, while Easter Sunday is a chance for all to exchange small gifts or tasty chocolate eggs.

ANZAC Day: locals residing within the park commemorate important wartime events on this nationwide holiday held on the 25th of the month.

Arafura Games: make the trip to Darwin for this major sporting event which draws athletes from across the Asia Pacific to participate in competitions in a variety of sporting disciplines.

BASSINTHEGRASS: also in Darwin is this popular music festival attracting acts from across the country and large numbers of spectators of all ages.

Queen’s Birthday: residents in the Kakadu region acknowledge the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with a public holiday, parties and lively celebrations.

Alice Springs Beanie Festival Competition: neighbouring Alice Springs hosts this unusual annual competition in which contestants enter wild and wacky beanie hat designs in the hope of winning the prestigious competition title.

July
 

Darwin Beer Can Regatta: held at Darwin's Mindil Beach, this event sees locals create and launch sea vessels made from beer cans of every size and variety. A great deal of time and effort goes into the construction of the boats with popular designs including Viking warships, canoes, cruisers, speedboats and schooners.

Darwin Fringe Festival: held during the months of July and August, this popular festival sees writers, poets, comedians, filmmakers and other creative types showcase their talents at a variety of venues around Darwin city centre.

Royal Darwin Show: for three days, the residents of Darwin and visitors from far and wide enjoy this lively celebration of country life featuring competitions, entertainment, arts and crafts, cooking, photography and horticulture.

August
 

Darwin Festival: this celebration of arts and culture is held over 18 days and features events with Asian, multicultural and indigenous themes. Expect to see a variety of performances from genres such as dance, music, theatre, comedy and visual arts.

Garma Festival: this annual Aboriginal festival sees some 20 clan groups from northeast Arnhem Land and others from the Northern Territory gather to promote and celebrate various aspects of indigenous cultural tradition.

September
 

Kakadu Arts Festival: previously known as the Jabiru Wind Festival, this annual affair is a celebration of Aboriginal and European culture through a variety of events and performances including art workshops, dance displays, live music, arts and crafts demonstration and food appreciation. The climax of the event is the grand fireworks display on Lake Jabiru.

October
 

Alice Springs Masters Games: known by locals as the ‘Friendly Games', this event sees mature athletes participate in a variety of sporting heats.

November
 

Desert Mob: held in Alice Springs, this event is a celebration of Aboriginal art reflecting the lengthy history and heritage and deep-rooted culture of the area’s indigenous peoples.

December
 

Christmas: Kakadu celebrates Christmas with the same enthusiasm as the rest of the country. The 25th is a public holiday and visitors holidaying in the park on this day will be able to enjoy traditional celebrations and festive food and drink at their hotels.
