Australia Introduction

To know that Australia is at once the world’s largest island and smallest continent just begins to explain why this country of vast and varied lands is so interesting. Australia has flora and fauna that is unique on the planet, while its geography is so diverse as to defy explanation. Whether exploring the waters around it or the land within it, you can’t find a more fascinating place to go on holiday.
Close to Asia, yet so Westernized, Australia offers great cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth which are modern and cosmopolitan, ready to offer visitors a wide range of cultural activities, exciting nightlife and exquisite dining. Travel inland and one finds surreal desolation and rugged mountains, along with outback deserts as well as tropical rainforests. Australia is still a wild land, untamed in many areas, so much so that new species are discovered at a faster rate than just about anywhere else on earth.
One of Australia’s biggest draws is its beautiful beaches and magnificent coral reefs, including the Great Barrier Reef, the largest structure made of living things in the world. Cape Tribulation, one of the oldest, most exotic and diverse tropical rainforest in the world, offers an incredible variety of living creatures. You can also enjoy the amazing wildlife of Australia inhabiting its interior, including its kangaroos, koalas, and wombats.
Australia is a land of excitement, bursting with colour, friendly people and fabulous things to see and do. Australians are generally pleasant and eager to enjoy the company of visitors, and are apt to say ‘G’day, mate’ to start a friendly conversation. When nightfall comes, the cities buzz with live jazz and rock in bars, cafes and pubs. No one parties better than Aussies!
Australia has excellent accommodation with everything from plush five star luxury hotels to resorts with idyllic beach bungalows. Don’t forget that the ‘Land of Oz’ is also the land of the ‘barbie’, with outdoor dining on barbequed seafood and meats a national pastime.
Australia’s cities are fascinatingly different, with personalities as varied as the land they inhabit. From the dynamic metropolis of Sydney, with its world famous harbour and beaches on the south-eastern coast to the free-spirited, laid back Perth on the western coast, each has its own style and makes its own way with regard to culture, dining and play.

Australia is not merely earth’s largest island; it is one of the planet’s most diverse and comprehensive environments. Few people would argue that Australia’s greatest draw is its natural beauty. This massive continent is home to both tropical rainforests and bone dry outback desert. It has vast rugged mountain ranges and seemingly endless idyllic beaches. The Great Barrier Reef, off the northeastern coastline, can even be seen from space.

Australia is a wonderful country for kids, with endless outdoor recreation opportunities, child-centred museums and plenty of interesting wildlife to gawk at. The beaches and water sports alone should keep children of all ages enthralled, but for urban activities you can spend some time at the Australian Museum, Sydney Aquarium or Taronga Zoo. Best of all, the locals are so friendly that everywhere you go you’ll find a welcoming smile.

Australia has the quantity and quality of world-class attractions you’d expect to find on a continent. The spectacular range of natural environments is only challenged by the incredibly festive and engaging towns and cities which line its vast coastline. As Australia is simply huge, many visitors choose to focus on one city or region during their trip. Most Australians haven’t seen half of their own amazing country since it’s so vast, so pick a region or two and delve into it.

All of Australia’s main cities have international airports, since flying is the most practical way to travel into and around this large country. Australia’s national carrier is Qantas, but about 25 other international airlines operate regular services to the country. The main airports are located in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane. Each of these major international gateways has excellent facilities in their terminals and good transport links into the city.
