Airports

Situated in the suburb of Cambridge around 12 miles from downtown Hobart, Hobart International Airport is the primary gateway to the city. The airport’s name is something of a misnomer since scheduled international flights have not operated here since the 1990s, but it still retains its international terminal and customs facilities for passengers arriving on chartered international flights from Singapore operated by Singapore Airlines.

For the majority of international visitors it is necessary to take a flight to a mainland airport such as Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne or Sydney and then a domestic transfer to Hobart. Domestic services are currently operated by Qantas, Jetstar Airways, Tasair, Tiger Airways and Virgin Blue. Some 20,000 flights are served annually by the airport, equating to approximately 1.6 million passengers.

The airport presents itself as a modern aviation facility offering similarly up to date services and amenities. Visitors flying into or out of the terminals can expect to find spacious air-conditioned lounge areas plus essentials such as public telephones, ATMs, dining and refreshment outlets, and a small selection of shops. Wi-fi access is also available in many areas of the terminals.

Getting to the city from the airport is a stress-free affair with a number of ground transfer options available. The Airporter Shuttle Bus service is a popular choice in terms of price and convenience. Services depart from outside the airport in the area between the Qantas and Virgin Blue terminals. No prior booking is necessary and all popular hotels and downtown destinations can be reached provided the driver has prior notice.

Taxis provide a convenient but more expensive alternative to the bus, with cabs available for hire immediately outside the domestic terminal building. Car hire is offered by a number of popular rental companies located on the airport premises while many visitors will be able to take advantage of free pick-ups offered by the hotels with which they have prior reservations.
