Hobart is the capital of the of Tasmania, the island state off the south east coast of the Australian mainland separated by 240 km (150 miles) of water called the Bass Strait. It is largely uninhabited and is one of Australia's best kept secrets.
The city also the smallest (population 129,000) of any major city in the country and like many, overlooks water, lying in the middle of a series of islands and peninsulas that surround Storm Bay. Situated at the foot of Mt Wellington it is home to a busy harbour and its mountain backdrop offers fine views over the compact suburbs below. Beautiful Georgian buildings line its picturesque streets and the relaxed atmosphere, numerous parks and attractive homes make Hobart one of the most enjoyable and engaging of Australia's cities.
