Airports
Broome International Airport is only a small airport but is the regional hub for north-western Australia and the main gateway to Broome and Kimberley. The airport is situated right in the town, serves over 300,000 passengers a year and has flights coming in from all over Australia.
Broome International Airport is served by five airlines including: Qantas (Perth and Darwin); AirNorth (Darwin and Kununurra); Virgin Blue (Sydney and Perth); and Golden Eagle Airlines and Skywest.
Facilities at Broome International Airport include modern check-in desks, gift shops and duty-free, a bar and restaurant and good transfer options to Broome and beyond.
The airport is located just to the north of downtown Broome and taxis, minibuses and airport shuttles provide transport options. If you have a hotel pre-booked in Broome, they will invariably pick you up. Those who have hire cars pre-booked online will also find Avis, Budget and Hertz desks in Arrivals.
Public Transport
Although Broome is fairly compact, you may still need to make use of the public transport if you are travelling as a family or in a group.
For bus transport within Broome, the Pearl Town Bus Service runs a regular service between Cable Beach, downtown Broome and Chinatown. Buses run on an hourly loop from 07:10 to 18:15 and at 30-minute intervals from 09:00 to 15:00 between May and October. The bus covers all major attractions, including Cable Beach, and single, five-day and group tickets are available.
Buses also run farther afield from the Greyhound Pioneer terminus in town, which is the main long distance bus operator in Broome. Buses arrive and depart daily for Perth and Darwin, stopping off at all towns in between. Greyhound Pioneer bus passes provide sizeable savings but should be obtained in advance.
Coach and four-wheel-drive companies also operate day tours of Broome as well as to destinations in Western Australia. Windjana and Geikie gorges are among the most popular sights visited, while Tunnel Creek and the Dampier peninsula are also well worth visiting.
Taxis and airport shuttles run from the airport to the town, hotels and beaches, and you can call ahead for transport all over the city.
Broome is bike-friendly with wide roads and easy, flat cycling. Many places rent out bikes in the town if your hotel doesn’t hire them out and they can be hired on an hourly, daily or weekly basis upon the payment of a small deposit.
Having a hire car to get around Broome is not necessary although if you plan to have a look around the bush, then having one is indispensable. Toyota Land Cruisers and Nissan Patrols are ideal for the dirt roads around Broome and can carry lots of gear. Several local companies in Broome accept online bookings. Motorbikes can also be booked online while scooters are ideal for getting about town.
