Top Things to See

Broome is a sightseer’s paradise, with attractions in all areas worth looking at. It has a fascinating multicultural downtown area complete with a vibrant Chinatown, lots of historical buildings and museums, and some of the most attractive coastline in the country.

Broome Historical Society Museum
The Broome Historical Society Museum is a must for anyone remotely interested in Broome’s history. It covers the rise of the town from pearl headquarters to tourism centre and is reputed to be one of Australia’s best regional museums. The museum is located in the old Custom's House near the Seaview Shopping Centre in the centre of Broome. Phone: +61 8 9192 2075.

Buccaneer Rock
In the days of the pirates, it was said that William Dampier, buccaneer extraordinaire, landed at the now Buccaneer Rock in Roebuck Bay to deposit a treasure chest loaded with pieces of eight. Town legend has it that his ghost can be seen on misty nights with a lantern searching for the buried treasure, although he and living explorers have as yet uncovered anything. Although quite probably a myth, there’s no harm in having a look for yourself. Buccaneer Rock can be found in Roebuck Bay opposite the Mangrove Hotel.

Cable Beach
Lying to the west of town, Cable Beach is one of the world’s finest beaches, a stunning 13 miles of white sand and crystal clear water. The beach offers excellent bathing and the fishing and snorkelling are first rate. Camel riding at sunset is the most popular activity here for tourists. The name ‘Cable Beach’ was derived from the telegraph cable that was run from here to Singapore and onto England in the late 1800s.

Crocodile Park
The Malcolm Douglas Broome Crocodile Park provides crocodile tours twice daily. If you have never seen a saltwater croc, then this is the place to see what all the fuss is about. The crocodile park can be found on Cable Beach road. Phone: 1800/099199.

Downtown Broome
Chinatown is the focus of downtown Broome and features colonial and Asian architecture side by side, while the Sunday markets are lots of fun. Much of the town is devoted to pearl showrooms and this is the best place to pick up a souvenir. The Courthouse is also a focal point of downtown Broome with its attractive gardens and large markets that feature arts, crafts, music, eating and a great atmosphere every Saturday.

Hard Hat Diver
The Hard Hat Pearl Diver statue celebrates Broome’s hard hat divers who helped shape Broome into a world leader in the pearling industry. The first pearl divers came from all over Asia to dive the waters off Broome, which had the knock-on effect of making Broome Australia’s first real multicultural town. The monument, erected in 1999, stands adjacent to the Cultured Pearling Monument in Chinatown.

Pearl Luggers
Located in the heart of Chinatown, the Pearl Luggers museum takes a look at Broome’s past related to fortunes from the sea. A trip to this small museum features a talk on the dangers the early divers faced to retrieve the pearls, the subsequent riches, and lots of memorabilia. Tours of the museum are given daily. You could also combine a visit to Pearl Luggers with a look at the Japanese Pearl Divers' Cemetery on Port drive. Website: www.pearlluggers.com.au.

War Memorial
Delve further into Broome’s past by taking a look at the War Memorial on Roebuck Bay, Hamersley street, which lies on the eastern side of the Broome peninsular. The memorial is situated in a lovely park which also includes a replica of one of explorer William Dampier's sea chests. The old train coach also positioned here was once used on the small railway that ran between Chinatown and the original Town Beach jetty.

Top Things to Do

Bath in Anastasia's Pool. Situated at Gantheaume Point in the general location of the famous dinosaur footprints on the western end of the peninsular, this manmade rock pool built by a lighthouse keeper for his wife, Anastasia, gave them both great comfort from her arthritis.

Browse Broome’s markets, held on Saturdays and Sundays at the Courthouse and Chinatown respectively. The markets are great fun even if you’re not into shopping, and Chinatown in particular has a fantastic bustling atmosphere. If you are here for the Staircase to the Moon spectacle, the Staircase Markets are interesting.

Go on a boat cruise and try a spot of fishing or discern Broome’s famous sunsets. Cruises go from Roebuck Bay or Cable Beach, and barracuda, barramundi, tuna, sailfish, marlin, and salmon are all game in-season. Beware of boating in the cyclone season.

Have a picnic over Town Beach at the end of Robinson street where there is a perfect picnic and swimming spot. A café also provides sustenance and if you are here between March and October, it is also the best place to view the Staircase to the Moon and associated Staircase Markets.

Hunt for dinosaur footprints at low tide at Gantheaume Point, four miles southwest of downtown Broome. These 120-million-year-old footprints can be seen at very low tide. If the tide isn’t low enough, you can see a plaster cast further up the rocks anytime. Be sure to take in the area at large with your camera, with the turquoise water, white beach and scarlet cliffs creating a palette of pleasing colours.

Marvel at the Staircase to the Moon from Roebuck Bay between March and October. The ‘staircase’ appears at very low tides over Roebuck Bay at full moon with the moon projecting its light over the exposed mudflats giving the illusion of a staircase climbing right up to the moon. Kids will be enthralled and the Staircase Markets provide a welcome addition during the event.

Taste some mango wine and enjoy the tang of the Kensington pride mango, just outside Broome. The mango wine of Broome has seen rapid expansion of late as locals have gotten used to the unique taste of the mango wine.

Trek Windjana Gorge which lies about 150 miles east of Broome Watch a Cable Beach sunset by camelback. Camel walks last for one hour and go along the beach on red sun camels. Everyone from young kids to the elderly can enjoy this activity.
