The outback oasis of Alice Springs is situated at the approximate centre-point of Australia. It is part of the Northern Territory, located in what is sometimes referred to as the Red Centre, a name that points to the rich ochre deposits found here. Located along iconic Ghan railway, Alice Springs is equidistance from Adelaide and Darwin.
Children are quickly enamoured by the wildlife and landscape of the Australian outback, and there's no better place to experience it than in Alice Springs. Ecotours and visits to wildlife sanctuaries and zoos usually receive the most praise from Alice's younger visitors. But there are plenty of other creative ways to take in the outback, including tours by hot-air balloons or on the back of a camel.
A number of festivals and events are held throughout the year in Alice Springs and across the rest of the Northern Territory. Many of these events celebrate the art and culture of the area’s indigenous tribes, while others cater specifically for tourists. The Henley-on-Todd Regatta is the most popular event, with a rambunctious crowd of celebrators joining in the festivities.
Alice Springs offers a unique blend of cultural highlights and natural landmarks for tourists to visit. The landscape itself is ochre-red with fascinating outcroppings of rock forming the gorges, gullies and chasms of the MacDonnell Ranges. This same precarious landscape created the need for several unique services (like the Flying Doctor Service and the School of the Air), which have helped mould the outback into a hospitable place.

The regional Alice Springs Airport is located nine miles from the city centre. This is one of the primary gateways to Australia's Red Centre, offering several domestic connections across the continent including to Darwin, Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne. Occasional charter flights arrive from international locations.
